After joining the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra cabinet on Sunday, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) senior leader Ajit Pawar hinted at a vertical split within the organization.
According to sources, Ajit Pawar and his followers were displeased by the NCP president Sharad Pawar and the party’s working president Supriya Sule’s attendance at the Opposition gathering in Patna.
Ajit Pawar was sworn in as the deputy chief minister during the event held at the Raj Bhawan by Governor Ramesh Bais, while eight other NCP leaders also took the oath of office as ministers.
Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Aditi Tatkare, Dharmarao Atram, Anil Patil, and Sanjay Bansode were among those sworn in as ministers.
Ajit Pawar has resigned as the leader of opposition (LoP) in the Lower House, according to Rahul Narwekar, the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, who was in the Raj Bhawan.
Additionally present in the Raj Bhawan were deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal and NCP working president Praful Patel.
Chandrashekhar Bawankule, head of the Maharashtra BJP, asserted that 40 of the NCP’s 53 legislators supported the state government.
The 288-member state Assembly will be elected the following year.
The political transition takes place a year after Shinde’s uprising against the Shiv Sena, which was still unified, toppled the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration.
Devendra Fadnavis, the BJP’s leader, was chosen as Shinde’s deputy on June 30, 2022.
CM Eknath Shinde supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi to preserve Hindutva, according to Ashish Shelar, the president of the BJP’s Mumbai chapter and a former State Minister. Ajit Pawar’s major NCP section is currently democratically joining the Shinde and Fadnavis administration and pledging support for Modi.
Ajit Pawar had meetings with several party officials and MLAs earlier in the day at his official residence, Devgiri, in Mumbai.
Among the leaders present at the meeting were senior NCP figures Bhujbal and Supriya Sule, working president of the party. Sule, though, adjourned the conference early.
The NCP’s Sharad Pawar claimed he was unaware of the meeting because he was in Pune.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena parted ties with longstanding ally BJP during the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Later, at a secret ceremony at the Raj Bhawan, Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were sworn in as the Chief Minister and deputy CM, respectively, but their administration barely lasted 80 hours.
After that, Thackeray joined forces with the NCP and Congress to create the MVA government.
Shinde was able to become chief minister with the support of the BJP after the Shinde-led revolt in June of last year split the Shiv Sena and toppled the MVA administration.
